Isamu Noguchi, an artist trained from childhood

Isamu Nogchi was an American-Japanese artist of the 20th century. He was born on November 17, 1904 in Los Angeles and grew up with a writer mother and a poet father. His taste for art manifested itself very early on, but it was as a sculptor and designer that he was mainly known. He studied in New York at the Leonardi da Vinci Art School before opening his own studio and having his first exhibitions.

Isamu Nogushi died on 30 December 1988 in New York, at the age of 84.

Isamu Noguchi, a sculptor influenced by his origins

The son of a Japanese father and an American mother, Isamu Nogushi multiplies his travels between East and West. He found himself in these two different cultures and was inspired by them in his creative process.

Isamu Nogushi studied traditional Chinese painting characterised by the play of shadows and the finesse of the brushstroke. He was also strongly influenced by the Mingei movement, a popular Japanese artistic movement and reformer in the field of architecture, painting and sculpture.

Isamu Nogushi was also attracted to the avant-garde of New York artists. He worked in the studio of Constantin Brancusi, a famous sculptor of his time and a great influence on art. He was considered to be an abstract expressionist artist.

For Isamu Nogushi, any object and any material can be sculpted. He likes to surprise with unusual works, which nobody would have thought of before. Today, his creations are exhibited in several countries, from Israel to the United States and the Netherlands.

Isamu Noguchi, the sculptor of light

Isamu Nogushi built a reputation for his creations and sculptures, and his work on light. He appreciated the play that can be produced by assembling totally opposite materials. He also liked to give role to reflections, shadows and other reverberations on his works.

In 1944, he was asked by the director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York to create a table with a glass top. His work was so revealing for him, that Isamu Nogushi would make it a trademark and created several others in his career.

Isamu Nogushi is also the inventor of Akari lamps. Inspired by the famous traditional Japanese lanterns, he modernised them and drew inspiration from them to produce luminous and humorous sculptures.

Isamu Nogushi also participated in the design of several gardens, such as the UNESCO garden in Paris. Furthermore, he was also the designer of one of the bridges of the famous Hiroshima Peace Park, in homage to the 1945 catastrophe.
