Discovery of art and first works of art
Jean Béraud is a French painter born on January 12, 1849 in St. Petersburg who died on October 4, 1935 in Paris.
Jean Béraud was born in Saint Petersburg with his twin sister, while his father, a sculptor, worked on the construction site of the cathedral of Saint Isaac. When his father died in 1853, his mother returned to Paris with her four children. Jean Béraud first studied at the Lycée Bonaparte with the intention of becoming a lawyer, but during the Franco-Prussian War he changed his mind and enrolled at the Paris School of Fine Arts under the teaching of the painter Léon Bonnat and took his first steps at the Salon des artistes français in 1872. His work Le Retour de l’enterrement brought him success as early as 1876 and he became one of the most important painters of Parisian life during the Belle Époque (from the late 19th century until the beginning of the First World War). His works depict the middle classes, scenes of daily life, as well as small trades and the atmosphere of cafés.
Recognition and awards
Jean Béraud produced more than 200 portraits throughout his career. He also created paintings with religious themes in which he depicts Christ in contemporary scenes, as is the case in La Madeleine chez le Pharisien in 1891. But Jean Béraud did not forget to paint more representative paintings of society with Les Fous, which he presented at the Salon of 1885. He was appointed Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1887 and was promoted to the rank of officer in 1894. In his final years, Jean Béraud devoted himself less to painting and preferred to participate in artistic juries and exhibition committees.
Jean Béraud was co-founder and became vice-president of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts alongside Auguste Rodin, Puvis de Chavannes and Joseph Meissonnier in 1890.
An interesting side story is that Jean Béraud was one of Marcel Proust’s witnesses, in February 1897 in Meudon, during his duel with Jean Lorrain after an article considered too insulting by Marcel Proust.
He died in 1935 in Paris, with no wife or children, and was buried in the Montparnasse cemetery.
Prizes
Béraud received the bronze medal at the Salon des artistes français in 1882, the silver medal at the Salon des artistes français in 1883 and the gold medal at the Salon des artistes français in 1889.
