Lê Thi Luu: a distinct woman

Lê Thi Luu was born in 1911 in the village of Thô Khoi in the north of Vietnam.

The young woman was famous for having been one of the few women to have followed the art classes given at the Indochina School of Fine Arts, founded by the French painter Victor Tardieu. Moreover, she managed to obtain her parents’ consent, which was not customary at the time.

She entered in 1927 at the age of fourteen and graduated in 1933, leaving some of the male artists of her time behind.

She then began to teach the art of painting in Hanoi and later in Ho Chi Minh City. There she trained one of the most famous Vietnamese talents of her time, notably the Vietnamese painter To Ngoc Van.

Alongside the sculptor Vu Cao Dam and under the impetus of her teacher Tardieu, the young woman travelled to France in 1937 to begin a Parisian career.

Settling in Paris in 1940 where she married, Luu worked in France and spent most of her time thereafter in Antibes, in the south of France.

An illustrious representative of modernism in Vietnam

In support of his artistic training, the artist’s style is rather classical. She favours the silk support to accommodate her oil preparations.

Her themes are borrowed from impressionist painting, she works her landscapes from a palette imbued with luminosity. The artist has a great affection for the painters Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Pierre Bonnard.

The lightness and refinement of his compositions earned him comparisons by some of his contemporaries, notably his teacher, Paul Cézanne.

Faces of women and children occupy her compositions, within bucolic environments, scenes of intimacy where a family shares tender moments related to motherhood.

In the form of portraits, on neutral backgrounds, or standing out from lightly wooded areas, the Vietnamese artist’s soft-lined faces are all very expressive and tell the emotions of everyday life.

An emblematic woman artist

During her career, Lê Thi Luu became a member of the Union of Women Painters, Sculptors and Engravers in Paris. This artistic association, founded in 1881 and bringing together French and foreign women artists, was founded by the sculptor Hélène Bertaux, whose dedication to her chosen field gave a solid foundation to the association, which lasted until 1994.

She lived and worked in Antibes until her death in 1988.

Her works are kept in private collections, but some of them belong to the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Museum.
