Marc Quinn’s youth
Marc Quinn is a contemporary British artist, he was born in London on 8 January 1964. The son of an English father and a French mother, he spent his early years in Paris where his father worked as a physicist. He remembers being fascinated by the instruments and the laboratory where his father worked.
He subsequently studied history and art history at Robinson College, Cambridge.
Marc Quinn and the exploration of the human body
The artist held his first exhibition in 1991 in London at Jay Jopling’s gallery, where he presented Self, an icy self-portrait made up of nine pints of his own blood. This work has the particularity of being continuously renewed, as the artist changes his blood from the pints every five years. It is currently in the National Portrait Gallery in London.
In 1995 Marc Quinn stopped drinking. He then created a series of seven lead sculptures cast from his body. Inspired by the traditional iconography of the seven deadly sins, the artist’s body is torn apart and reconfigured in each sculpture, reflecting detoxification as a physical and psychological battle.
During this decade of the 90s, Quinn was quickly spotted for his radical approach to creation and his artistic experiments.
Marc Quinn and the use of different materials
The artist’s early work is concerned with questions of corporeality, decay and preservation. He experiments with organic and degradable materials, including bread, blood, lead, flowers and sculptures.
In the 2000s, he focused more on the use of marble, bronze and concrete, exploring the human body and its finishes through the use of classical urban material.
It was also during this period that he presented a solo exhibition at the Prada Foundation in Milan featuring his most ambitious work in terms of organic material, Garden. This 12-metre long and 3-metre high sculpture features thousands of flowers, frozen in silicon, which have the particularity of never blooming at the same time of year or in the same parts of the world.
Since 2010, he has been working with metal, in particular stainless steel and aluminium, but also with seaside detritus, tapestry, paint and graffiti.
He is also known to have participated in charity auctions, notably for associations helping the homeless or specialising in cancer research.
