Artistic training and movement
Vasudeo S. Gaitonde (known as VS Gaitonde) is an abstract painter born in 1924 in Nagpur, India. He is considered one of the most important painters in India. He lived and worked in the Delhi region and died anonymously in 2001.
In 1948 he graduated from the Sir JJ School of Art and in 1950 he joined a group of progressive artists in Bombay. VS Gaitonde joined Francis Newton Souza, MF Husain and SH Raza.
He took part in the exhibition of Indian art held in Eastern Europe in 1956, and also in group exhibitions at the Graham Art Gallery in New York in 1959 and 1963. VS Gaitonde’s abstract works can be found in Indian and foreign collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
However, VS Gaitonde has never considered himself an abstract painter and does not wish to be confined to this style.
His latest paintings differed from those of the 1940s and 1950s. Following a car accident in the 1980s, he had to change his painting method: no longer able to paint on large canvases, he decided to create on small sheets of paper.
Awards and recognition
VS Gaitonde is known for its calm style, inviting to meditation and contemplation. He is also a precursor of the abstract movement, which is still very little spread in India.
He was awarded first prize at the Young Asian Artists Exhibition in Tokyo in 1957 and the Rockefeller Fellowship in 1964. The Indian government was not to be outdone and awarded him the Padma Shri Prize in 1971. VS Gaitonde is the first contemporary Indian painter to have sold a work for $130,000 at an auction in Mumbai in 2005. Christie’s is auctioned an untitled painting by VS Gaitonde for $3.4 million in 2013.
In October 2014, the Guggenheim Museum in New York will hold the first retrospective of the artist’s work there. This exhibition has certainly helped VS Gaintonde’s works to soar in price, added to the fact that the painter only produced 5 to 6 paintings a year.
