First steps as a sculptor

Alighiero Boetti is an Italian painter, visual artist and sculptor linked to the Arte Povera artistic movement. He was born on 16 December 1940 in Turin and died on 24 April 1994 in Rome.

Alighiero Boetti is considered one of the leading artists of the Italian avant-garde born in the mid-1960s. Claiming to be a painter, Alighiero Boetti nevertheless abandoned painting at the age of 22 in favour of sculpture. He exhibited for the first time in January 1967 at the Stein Gallery in Turin. There he mainly presented sculptures for which he used juxtaposition and stacking of materials. In the same year he took part in Arte Povera with Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Giulio Paolini and Michelangelo Pistoletto. This is how they set up the artistic movement that would make them famous. L’arte povera claims a socially committed and critical attitude to the consumer society. Alighiero Boetti’s works contribute to a renewal of the artistic language, emphasising the creative process rather than the finished object. Moreover, his work enhanced the conceptual meaning of the work to its visible message. His work is still studied today and is the subject of a travelling retrospective that has been presented at the Museo Sofia in Madrid, the WOAgri in New York and the Tate Modern in London.

Various methods of creation

Alighiero Boetti’s works are “objects” made of common materials such as cardboard, aluminium and wood. The artist is interested in duality, measure and multiplicity. In 1968, he chose to separate his first and last names by means of the conjunction of coordination e. One year later, Alighiero e Boetti became interested in Mail Art and created numerous compositions of stamped and franked envelopes. These works highlight the temporal and spatial displacement. In 1971, Alighiero e Boetti went to Kabul for the second time and had the first Mappa embroidered by Afghan artisans. The Mappa represents a geographical map where the territories are filled in with the motifs of their flags. The Mappa exhibited at the Mamco would be one of the first made in Kabul in the early 1970s. More than 150 Mappa will be made during the next 20 years. From 1973, Alighiero e Boetti began to create the famous Il Muro, a sort of representation of his personal poetry. His work is made up of images, photographs, found objects, calendar pages and drawings of his friends. Il Muro represents the painter’s reflection on the world. It includes a collage of his daughter, a letter, sketches, notes and calligraphy. Some parts of Il Muro have become full-fledged and independent works. The particularity of Alighiero e Boetti is his ability to delegate his work on the making of the works. The artist “subcontracted” part of his work without difficulty, emphasising collaboration between artists.
