David Hockney, an internationally renowned British artist

David Hockney is a British landscape painter and portraitist. He was born on July 9, 1937 in Bradford and comes from a modest family. He joined the School of Art of his home town at the age of 11 where his passion for drawing grew. He continued and completed his training at the Royal College of Art in London.

David Hockney was awarded special recognition from the British Royal Family on 2 January 2012. He was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II as a member of the British Order of Merit. Hockney has received international acclaim, making him the subject of numerous retrospectives, including the one at Paris’ Centre Pompidou in 1999.

Even today, he is one of the most influential and wealthy artists in Europe.

David Hockney, an autobiographical and modern artist

David Hockney draws inspiration for his work from his own life. He doesn’t try to lie and convey invented messages, but tells his story, his intimacy. For example, he depicted the painting “Portrait of an artist” in 1972, in which he testifies to a love disappointment that upset him. David Hockney also paints many self-portraits, as well as portraits of family members and friends.

David Hockney is an accomplished artist who has mastered the art of painting to perfection. But he has also explored other artistic avenues, such as photography, collage and engraving. He knows how to adapt to the changing world, and he does not hesitate to appropriate the new materials at his disposal. He works as well on canvas as on video, and more recently has successfully worked with new technological elements. In 2011, he created a video installation about the evolution of nature.

David Hockney, an artist on the fringes of all artistic movements

Hockney does not recognise himself in any of the art movements of his time. He admires the work of great classical artists, such as Van Gogh and Picasso, and strives to work on the aesthetics of his canvases. On the fringe of the main artistic styles, and mainly conceptualism, Hockney refuses to favour the idea or the concept, without giving importance to the beauty of his work. It is in this state of mind that, during the 1970s, he created an assemblage of photographs, called “Joiners”. This montage made it possible to see the same scene from several different points of view and thus better interpret the process of perception.

Hockney specializes in figurative art, which he works to the point of becoming almost expressionist. He worked on this subject in 2003 with the famous Lucian Freud, a contemporary painter from the United Kingdom. The two artists painted each other, highlighting their respective skills in figurative art.
