Classical training

Dimitrij Nalbandjan, born in 1906 and died in 1993, was a Russian-Armenian painter, who was very well known in the Soviet Union where he was awarded several honorary titles. He was awarded the titles of Popular Artist of the USSR in 1969, Hero of Socialist Labour in 1976, and was elected a member of the USSR Academy of Arts in 1953. He also won the Stalin Prize twice (in 1946 and 1951).

He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tbilisi, the city where he was born, where he was taught by Eugène Lanceray, before moving to Moscow.

The influence of Impressionism and the Soviet revolutionary regime

Dimitrij Nalbandjan was mainly a painter of portraits, landscapes and ceremonies, using mainly oil paint.

During his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tbilisi, he attended the class of Eugène Lanceray, a great Russian painter, sculptor and illustrator, known in particular for his association with the Mir iskousstva movement (advocating a Russian pictorial revival), as well as for his support for the revolutionary cause.

Dimitrij Nalbandjan claimed links with impressionism in his paintings, inspired in particular by Konstantine Alekseevitch Korovine, a Russian painter of landscapes and historical portraits as well as a decorator, especially of Russian theatres, also known for his support of the Russian revolution.

Portraits and landscapes

Dimitrij Nalbandjan became famous for painting portraits of many of the great representatives of the Soviet political class and the world-famous leaders of the USSR. He painted portraits of Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev and Leonid Brezhnev (General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union).

Many of his works have been estimated and sold at auction in recent decades, with estimates ranging from a few thousand (sometimes one or two) to several tens of thousands of dollars. For example, in the case of portraits, Lenin’s 1961 portrait “Lenin in Razlive” (showing the leader in a natural setting, probably a garden or park) is estimated at $15,000-$25,000, and “Lenin’s Speech in the House of the Unions, Moscow” is estimated at $10,000-$150,000. The 1953 portrait of Stalin is estimated at $3,750-$5,000, and Brezhnev at the 26th KPSS Congress at $4,000-$6,000.

Besides portraits of political figures, Dimitrij Nalbandjan also paints places and landscapes. His painting “At the Plenary Session of the Communist Party”, for example, is estimated to fetch between $2500 and $3500. His works depicting landscapes of the USSR fetch much higher prices. For example, “Crimean Beach” is estimated at $12,000 to $18,000, and his 1975 painting “Shift Change” (depicting city figures in an urban setting) has an estimate value of between $45,000 and $60,000.
