Education à la française

Lundström Knut was a Swedish painter born in 1892 in Östersund, he died in 1945 in Copenhagen.

He attended the Wilhelmson School of Painting from 1912 to 1915 and lived in Paris from 1919 to 1933, where he studied for a year with André Lhote, the famous Cubist painter and theoretician.

Lundström was quite active in France, where he had limited success exhibiting at the Salon des artistes indépendants. He was nevertheless supported and promoted by the very famous Otto G. Carlsund, a Swedish artist and critic, who also lived in France where he built his career.

Moving towards abstraction

Although his first works were rather figurative, mostly depicting harbour landscapes and the French countryside, early on, in 1921, Lundtröm Knut became interested in the pictorial representation of music, an idea that he would obsess over throughout his career.

In the 1930s, Lundström Knut was one of the founders of the group Les Artistes Musicalistes, where painters sought to express the emotions caused by the vibrations of music through colour and canvas. From then on, Lundström Knut turned to figurative painting.

Painting music

Lundström Knut’s artistic, abstract and musical explorations are comparable to those of his contemporary Kandinsky, who also made direct references to music in the titles of his works. Examples include Evolution Rhythmic, sold by Christie’s for 21,255 euros in Stockholm on 23 May 2000, and Symphony No. 1, sold on 1 November 2007.

The artist’s presence in auction houses remains discreet, however, and his paintings sell for a wide variety of prices, with a preference for abstract paintings.

Although Lundström Knut worked mainly in France, he died in Copenhagen in 1945 at the age of 53.
