Falk and the “Jack of Diamonds”

Robert Falk is a Russian painter belonging to the Russian avant-garde. He was born in Moscow in October 1886 and began to study art in private studios, such as that of the Soviet painter and art theorist Constantin Juon. He then attended the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture as a student of Constantin Korovine, Valentin Serov, Leonid Pasternak and Anton Arkhipov. In 1910, Falk became friends with some of his fellow students and decided to create the “Jack of Diamonds”, which lasted until 1913 and of which he was one of the most important representatives. The basis of this painting movement was essentially based on the interpretation of the lessons of the painter Paul Cézanne and, more generally, of German Post-Impressionism and Expressionism. This community of artists was one of the first groups of the Russian avant-garde to reject the academicism and realism of the 19th century.

A travelling and versatile artist

Robert Falk’s painting is distinguished by the accentuation of its forms and by the application of several layers of paint. In 1911, he went on a trip to Italy, where he studied medieval architecture and classical art. He joined the Moscow College in 1918 in the Plastic Arts section, created after the February-October Revolution and set up by the People’s Commissariat for Education.

Falk also taught painting at the Higher Institute of Art and Technology and at the Vkhutemas from 1918 to 1928. In this last year, the painter travels to France for a stay that was to last only a short time, but which, in the end, lasts ten years. He settled in Paris, where he also worked until 1938. It was only after these ten years that the artist returned to Moscow.

Falk, a link between the Russian avant-gardes

From the date of his return until his death in 1958 Falk worked continuously in the Moscow capital, especially in the theatre, where he lived in a certain isolation. The works he produced in the last twenty years of his life were post-impressionist and close to the paintings of Valentin Serov, the man who was Falk’s guardian in his youth.

During De-Stalinization, the period following Stalin’s death in 1953, Robert was a popular artist among the younger generation of painters. He was seen as a bridge between the two Russian avant-gardes, the first and the second, which began in the 1960s.
