The Vera Rockline route
Vera Rockline was a Russian painter born in 1896 in Moscow to a French mother and a Russian father. She studied in Moscow in the studio of the painter Ilia Machkov and later studied under Alexander Exter in Ukraine. After the October Revolution, she continued to paint, building canvases and making paint with very modest means; aware that she would have great difficulty selling the paintings. At the same time, in order to be able to survive, she produced paintings for propaganda purposes.
First exhibitions and arrival in France
She exhibited at the Union of Russian Painters in 1918-1919 under her own name, Schlezinger, as well as for the 5th National Painting Exhibition “From Impressionism to Abstraction”. The painter was forced to flee her country with her husband in 1919 for two months. This journey was made in difficult conditions, as they hid in the hold of a boat with 60 people for three days in order to cross the Black Sea. She finally arrived in Georgia, in the town of Tiflis, still accompanied by her husband, whom she finally left in 1921 when she returned to France. She first settled in her family home in Burgundy, her mother’s native region, and then moved to Paris to settle in the Montparnasse district. In 1922, she found success thanks to her work, which she exhibited at the prestigious Salon d’Automne, the Tuileries and the Salon des Indépendants, among others. The famous couturier Paul Poiret bought four of her paintings from her at the same time. She also became friends with the Russian painter Zinaida Serebrakova.
A resounding success despite a tragic ending
In addition to the artistic scene, she also conquered the intellectual sphere of her time, exhibiting the work of the French libertarian poet Charles Vildrac in the gallery at 11 rue de Seine, while Paul Poiret wrote the preface to her exhibition catalogue for the occasion. The prestigious Musée du Luxembourg bought her painting Victuailles in 1925. Paul Poiret, who truly appreciated Rockline’s work, presented her work alongside that of Picasso, Modigliani and Kees van Dogen, all pioneers of twentieth-century art, while the art critics never ceased to acclaim her work. However, at only 38 years of age, Vera Rockline decided to take her own life. The exhibition “Elles de Montparnasse” integrated her work definitively, albeit belatedly, into French art history.
