Wang Yancheng’s academic training

Wang Yancheng is a Franco-Chinese painter born in Guangdong province in 1960. He now lives between Paris and Beijing.

He studied first at the School of Art, then at the Shandong Academy of Fine Arts in Yantai, until 1985. In 1986, he entered the Beijing School of Fine Arts and in 1990, he left to study plastic arts in France at the University of Saint-Etienne.

During this first French trip, the artist immersed himself in European art, of which he particularly admired Matisse, Picasso and Rothko. In 1995 he became a lecturer at the Shandong Academy of Fine Arts in Yantai.

Immediate success in the movement of Zao Wou Ki and Che Teh Chun

At the beginning of his career, the artist distinguished himself as a portraitist, which allowed him to make a name for himself and to be paid. This success was reflected in his invitation to exhibit at the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation in 1996, where he was awarded the Prince Albert Prize.

That same year 1996 marked a real turning point in the artist’s career, as he moved from figurative to abstract painting. From then on, Wang Yancheng’s work is considered to be part of the movement of the famous Zao  Wou-Kiand Chu Teh-Chun, painters of lyrical abstraction.

The success of our artist continues as he was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 2006. In 2007, the artist produced a monumental painting for the Beijing Opera, before being named Commander of Arts and Letters in 2015.

Abstract division

Currently appreciated in auction houses, the popularity of Wang Yancheng’s work continues to grow. For example, a painting by the artist is now trading at an average price of 100 000 €, compared to 20,000 € in 2010. One of the most popular was probably Untitled, (2012), which was sold for 625,953 € at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong on 24 November 2013.

Wang Yancheng’s work presents a dialogue between man and the universe, while retaining Chinese influences. The accumulation of colours, the relief work of the painting, and the sharp contrasts characterize the abstract research of our artist’s pictorial work.

The contrast between the bright colours usually affixed to a dark background could also evoke the duality experienced by an artist still today divided between two continents, between China and France.
