The Qing Dynasty

The Qing Dynasty was the last imperial family to rule China, from 1644 to 1912, succeeding the Ming Dynasty. Ancient Chinese painting takes up the characteristics of the previous periods as shown by the artist Yun Shouping, taking inspiration from the Song period. The beauty of landscapes were at the heart of artistic creation.

Painting from the Qing period

Some missionary artists such as Giuseppe Castiglione were to have an influence on the art of Chinese painting. Some painters work on details like Qiu Ying, Tang Yin and Tong Zhi Chang. Calligraphy is still present in painting as shown in the works of Wu Wei, Don Qichang, Ni Zan or Dai Jin.

The characteristics of Qing Dynasty painting are the combination of: painting, calligraphy and poetry.

Qing porcelain

Porcelain production centres such as the one in Jingdezhen export their production on a massive scale all over the world. Traditional forms are widely appreciated. The decorations were adapted to European taste with the rose family, and pieces were imported to the West thanks to the Indian Companies. Trade would develop in the 17th century. The green family also developed, and turquoise blue disappeared from the works.

Qing furniture

The furniture of the Qing dynasty was influenced by European style. Sculpture became more and more present on the furniture, where one may find flowers, dragons and stylised leaves. Qing furniture is larger than that of the Ming dynasty.
