The origin of the company

Louis Vuitton is a famous French luxury leather goods and ready-to-wear brand founded in 1854 (by Louis Vuitton himself), and run by members of the same family until 1889.

Louis Vuitton was born into a modest French family. Trained as a carpenter, he began making trunks and packing the belongings of wealthy customers. As different means of transport became grew and became more reliable, the well-to-do classes travelled more and Louis Vuitton seized this opportunity to develop his business.

The first trunks were a great success. They were flat and therefore much easier to stack than the traditional round trunks. Since then, the company has continued to innovate in the material’s lightness and strength, always with luxury clientele in mind and favouring made-to-measure solutions.

Characteristics of Louis Vuitton’s expertise

The canvas covering Louis Vuitton’s trunks and luggage is now iconic. It features the monogram of the brand’s creator, “LV”, two intertwined letters and four-petalled flowers inspired by Gien earthenware tiles. The graphic is usually applied in dark brown on top of a lighter brown or the other way around, so that the “monogram” always stands out.

A real Louis Vuitton bag or accessory has a label, usually made of natural-looking leather, that reads “Louis Vuitton, Paris, Made in France”. The label is located inside the bag or accessory and includes a  date (from 1980). The pattern on the leather must be uniform and symmetrical on each side of the bag. Zips, snaps and chains must be shiny and of good quality, and contain clear and precise inscriptions with the Louis Vuitton monogram. Finally, the thread linking the seams together is yellow and the inside of the bags and accessories is made of brown canvas.

Louis Vuitton and the art market

The selling price of Louis Vuitton trunks depends on their rarity, size and condition. The most highly-prized, and the rarest are undoubtedly the cigar trunks or medicine boxes. This was proven by a 2013 auction (Artcurial, Paris) where a “Monogram” canvas cigar box sold for 39,900 euros.

Secretarial and closet trunks have estimates and purchase prices generally between 15,000and 20,000 euros, while estimates and purchase prices for cabin and mail trunks generally range between 5,000 and 8,000 euros.
