Chu Teh Chun was born in China on 20 October 1924 and died in Paris on 26 March 2014. He came from a family of Chinese collectors. He entered the Hangzhou School of Fine Arts in 1935 where he studied under Lin Fengmian. In addition to his studies, he produced nearly five hundred watercolours on the landscapes of the West Lake in a traditional style. He wished to turn towards traditional painting, but his school provided courses on Western painting. From 1937 to 1951, he had a career as an itinerant teacher travelling through several universities in China and he prolifically created artworks.
