Portraits and Rome

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres as a French painter born on 29 August 1780 in Montauban who died on 14 January 1867 in Paris, where he was buried at the Père-Lachaise cemetery.

Dominique Ingres, whose father was sculptor Jean-Marie-Joseph Ingres, was introduced to art at an early age. He enrolled at the Academy of Toulouse in 1791, then moved to Paris in 1796 as a pupil of the painter Jacques-Louis David. In 1801 he won the Prix de Rome with his work Les Ambassadeurs d’Agamemnon and took the opportunity to move into the former Capuchin convent with other students of Jacques-Louis David; during this period, Dominique Ingres painted mainly portraits such as that of his friend Pierre-François Bernier.

He became engaged to his first love, Marie-Anne-Julie Forestier, in 1806, but his departure to Italy put an end to their romance. Dominique Ingres discovered the works of Raphael and the Quattrocento movement, which marked his style. The years that followed were the most fertile years of his career. He mastered his art and perfected his skills with landscapes, portraits, drawings and historical compositions. His stay in Rome also enabled him to build up a network and Dominique Ingres became friends with representatives of the imperial administration. Although his works were not sold in France, Dominique Ingres remained living and working in Rome. In 1813, he married Madeleine Chapelle, for whom he painted more than ten portraits, including the famous Turkish Bath, painted in 1962, after Madeleine’s death.

Return to France and recognition

Dominique Ingres came across economic difficulties upon the fall of Napoleon I. He painted everything he was commissioned to paint and used his Italian connections to find patrons, including Charles Marcotte d’Argenteuil, who remained until his death in 1864. In 1820, Dominique Ingres left for Rome and settled in Florence until 1824. His work The Vow of Louis XIII brought him success and recognition.

He was exhibited at the Salon of 1824 and became director of the Académie de France in Rome from 1835 to 1840. On Madeleine’s death, Dominique Ingres married Delphine Ramel, his patron’s niece in 1852. The couple bought a property in the Loire at Meung-sur-Loire where the painter spent all his summers. He was raised to the rank of Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour in November 1855 and was called to join the Imperial Senate in May 1862. Dominique Ingres was also a violinist and became second violin in the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, hence the French expression, to have a “violon d’Ingres“, meaning to have a hobby one does purely for pleasure.
