An artist on all fronts, from Noucentisme to the Cercle et Carré magazine
Joaquin Torres Garcia is a painter born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1874. He began to learn mural painting at the age of 17 in the city of Barcelona. He went to Belgium and then to France in 1910 and returned to Barcelona to paint frescoes for the Palace of Duplication and the Church of San Augustin. During the 1920s, the first era of his artistic career, he was a muralist painter representing Noucentisme, the Catalan movement in opposition to Modernism.
Afterwards Torres Garcia travelled a lot, in New York and in the European capitals: he discovered futurism, settled in Paris for a few years where he exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and took part in the European avant-garde movement. He also founded the group and the magazine Cercle et Carré with Michel Seuphor.
He returned permanently to his native country in 1932 and died there 17 years later, in 1949.
Between East and West
For his work he draws inspiration both from pre-Columbian civilisation and from the works of Paul Klee. In several of his canvases we find letters, symbols and figures that we must be able to decipher. His abstractions in random geometry frame subjects borrowed from several cultures, many of them older, and are mostly monochrome. He made his famous drawing, America del Sur in 1946, reversing the north and south representation of South America as well as the values that the West injects into this dichotomy, thereby inviting his fellow citizens to rethink their place in the world.
Artist and theorist
He also produced some unusual works, such as the wooden toys he marketed, which allowed him to try out new plastic theories. He also published a book in 1944 that brought together his artistic theories Universalismo constrcuctivo : contribution a la unification del arte y de la cultura de Amercia. Amercia. Alongside collaborators, he also created a workshop for the creation of murals and a new magazine, Removedor.
In his autobiography he writes about his artistic practice (about a painting from 1918): “Both expressionist and geometric as well as very dynamic, producing an effect that is sometimes realistic, sometimes synthetic – a painting with free rhythms, but now also with vertical and horizontal dominants that will serve more as a foundation for another painting”. This is how he manages to capture the architecture of the New World to come.
