How much is a Canton vase worth?
The majority of Canton vases were produced in 19th century China. They are often accompanied by bronze handles or bases (the latter can also be made of wood). The decorations are made of polychrome enamels. The most frequent motifs are cartouches of characters, flowers, dragons and abstract motifs (scrolls). These vases are very often inspired by the decorations of porcelain of the green or pink or celadon family. The shapes are quite variable (baluster, vase, hexagonal) as well as the sizes.
Production began in the 17th century in order to satisfy demand from the West. The decorations are adapted to European taste. In the 19th century, these pieces were often brought back by the West as travel souvenirs.
Prices are quite variable, ranging from a few hundred euros to several thousand euros. There are many pieces on the market, but some can be distinguished by the care taken in the decoration. A pair of cylindrical porcelain vases with polychrome enamel decoration sold for 5 625 euros in 2018.
Some Canton vases can hold some nice surprises when they are auctioned off. Indeed, a large celadon glazed porcelain baluster vase with dragon decoration and stylised chilong handles was originally estimated 1 000-1 500 euros and went on sale at 37 488 euros in 2018. In 2011, a pair of large Canton vases decorated with palace scenes of armed figures estimated at 3000-4000 euros went to 27,000euros.
Many of these vases are mounted as lamps. The value of these objects may vary depending on condition, size and decoration.
