The Baccarat factory

The Baccarat crystal factory has been a leader in progress amongst crystal manufactures for several centuries. Since the 19th century, Baccarat has been renowned worldwide for its pursuit for perfection.

In parallel with the traditional techniques of the art of glassmaking, the crystal maker is a pioneer in manufacturing moulded pieces. This is done with pieces being blown into a mould giving the glass its shape, but also through tools such as the “Robinet pump” invented by glassblower Ismaël Robinet which, via a pumping action, injects sudden pressure into the vitrifiable material. In 1832, the “Barbier, Launay & Cie” company (which later became “Launay, Hautin & Cie”) were put in charge of the distribution of crystal works in eastern France.

The appearance of watermarked pieces

Around 1839, the director of the Choisy-le-Roi glassworks presented watermarked pieces (a technique involving inserting opaque crystal rods into transparent crystal and playing with the lines to create patterns). The Baccarat, Clichy and Saint Louis crystal works have followed in these footsteps. The watermarked Baccarat pedestal tables have been a great success with customers.

Baccarat services are sought after by the market

Baccarat crystal services include decanters, wine glasses, water glasses, champagne flutes and other liquor glasses. They are highly sought-after pieces on today’s market. Baccarat’s decorative objects are also very much in demand. Baccarat vases, chandeliers, snake-handled goblets, flasks and candelabras are all items that can work up a storm at auction. It should be noted that certain exceptional items such as the Nepenthes vase, the Mures vase and the Baccarat chandeliers with water jets, are exceptional pieces with very high prices.
