Lange & Söhne: a family hstory

The ultimate brand. Lange & Söhne is a German brand, with German designers, Ferdinand Adolph Lange, born in Dresden in 1815, and his descendants (Söhne means “sons” in German). The young watchmaker learned the trade from his father-in-law. The company was founded in 1845 in the Saxon mountains of Glashütte.

Supported by around fifteen apprentices, the “Centre of precision German watchmaking” created by Ferdinand Adolph Lange saw its activity develop with an ever-growing clientele. Joined by his son Richard in 1868, Lange continued to create new models, including unprecedented technical innovations, notably with the creation in the 1870s of a women’s watch model, which was then the smallest model ever created with an anchor and seconds. Ferdinand Adolph Lange died in 1875, leaving his sons, Richard and Emil, to perpetuate the tradition of a resolutely technical and luxurious watchmaking creation.

The Second World War marks a parenthesis in the history of the brand, which fell under the control of the GDR in 1948. The A-brand. Lange & Söhne disappears with the workshops, destroyed by an air raid. But the brand and its prestige are reborn thanks to Walter Lange, grandson of the brand founder, in the early 1990s.

The company was bought by the Swiss company Richemont in 2000 and since then has continued to create the models that have made its reputation as a luxury watchmaker, iconic and timeless.

Lange & Söhne, the timeless timepiece

Lange 1, sophisticated classicism

This watch perfectly illustrates the work of the A brand. Lange & Söhne. This model has seduced over one amateur since its creation in 1994. Characterised in particular by its patented large date, its hand-engraved balance cockerel and its yellow gold case, surmounted by a solid silver frame, the Lange 1 is an essential model in watchmaking.

From classicism to modernity

Other models are now a must, such as the Cabaret Datograph model, characterised by aesthetic harmony and hitherto unrivalled technology. The model is then declined in Saxonia and Automatik watches.

The inspiration that characterises this luxury brand is constantly being renewed. This is the case for a model created in 2009. It is a wristwatch with digital display, a first for the brand, but also for luxury watchmaking. A gamble that paid off, since Lange & Söhne was able to attract new, younger enthusiasts, but also to retain a loyal clientele.

Value and record prices

The iconic brand with its meticulous finishes and innovative techniques has maintained a fairly high profile in the world of luxury watchmaking since the beginning of its creation. The brand, which was renewed in the 1990s, has not shirked its success with enthusiasts and collectors, since its iconic models sell for around 10,000euros. This sum has to be doubled or even tripled in order to be able to afford the brand’s must-have models, especially those in limited editions.

In 2017, a record price was reached at the sale of a model produced in a limited edition of fifty in 1996: The Tourbillon “Pure” with a platinum case and black dial. Estimated at between 190,000 and 240,000euros, the watch was sold at the end of a fiercely contested auction for the sum of 330,000euros.
